Review: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Juliette hasn't touched anyone in exactly 264 days.

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette's touch is fatal. As long as she doesn't hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don't fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war– and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she's exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

I literally just finished Shatter Me, and I AM IN LOVE. I started the book this morning, and I was gripped by the very first page. If you are a fan of The Hunger Games or Article 5, both of which are major obsessions of mine, you will absolutely fall for Shatter Me.

First of all, the writing style. It is freaking genius. I was reading Goodreads review by people complaining about the writing, and I was just like "You. Are. Crazy." Of course, they are entitled to their own opinion. I just think its wrong. Very very very wrong.... The writing was so incredibly perfect for the girl-who-thinks-she-might-be-insane. I loved the crossed out words that gave way to her real thoughts, and the lack of correct grammar, because it just worked.

At first, when I read the blurb, I was unsure if I would be able to connect with the main character, Juliette. However, after the first page, my worries and ponderingments were left behind. With my heart. I think I lost that, and I think it's on the first page Adam was mentioned, because I LOVE HIM.

Yes, yes, I am fan girling again. But he is just so GREAT. I have had many a squeal fest while reading Article 5, Delirium, Hunger Games, you name it. This just added to the squeal-worthy collection.

I realize I haven't given a great description of the book so far, so here goes: The book begins with a girl called Juliette, who is locked away in an insane asylum because she can't touch anyone. Her touch literally pains people, and no one knows why. While she is locked away, the world has become a bleak place where The Reestablishment has taken over to cleanse the world and start it over after the decisions of previous generations ruined the Earth. Juliette then gets a roommate, and they decide they need to resist.... I won't say any more, other than READ IT.

I would definitely recommend this one, especially if you like dystopian novels. This was the perfect balance between action, romance, mystery, and some crazy. I can't wait until the sequel comes out!! This DEFINITELY deserves five stars.
